Day trip: Cape Cove Beach

If you are ever lucky enough to drive up or down the Oregon coast, there is a tiny beach with views of a gorgeous lighthouse that is worth the detour. Between Florence and Yachats on the Pacific Coast Highway lies Cape Cove Beach and the Heceta Head Lighthouse. The beach and lighthouse are located in Devil’s Elbow State Park, which is home to miles of hiking trails, amazing bird- and seal-watching, and stunning views of the coastal sea stacks. We took a family trip and spent the day playing fetch in the ocean.

We had to take a break when our feet were numb.

Overall, it was a perfect family trip, and I hope to be back soon!

I gave this beach two paws up because it was scenic and packed with adventure. There are many spots to have a picnic lunch, hike around the lighthouse, and relax by the shore. I would recommend pups to be careful if they plan on playing fetch in the Pacific Ocean. Although I make it look easy, I am a very strong swimmer. The currents of the Pacific Ocean are very swift and strong, and the water is lined with sharp and jagged rocks. Be careful, bring plenty of water, and assess your pup’s health before letting them play in the Pacific.

Stay tuned for my next blog post, where I explore more of the Oregon Coast.

  1. Hi Scarlett. I love the picture of you chasing your Mom along the coastline. That water must have been really, really cold to make your feet numb! We also follow Da D B Boys who live in Northern CA and share their travels to the Oregon coast. Maybe you will run into them sometime (they are small boy dogs with grrreat pawrents)

  2. Oh, this is such a cute post! Scarlett looks so happy. I feel like running around the beach too. I have not explored the Oregon Coast but I know I need to do it one day. Well, I will be happy if I make it to Oregon at all! #WeekendWanderlust

  3. Lovely photographs and the day out looked like fun. We have a big lighthouse here but it is de-commissioned and privately owned and the best we can do is look at it.. Like your lighthouse, there are cottages that go with the lighthouse and they are hired out to groups for conferences./ I have taken Benji there a few times mainly because it is a good drive out to the area. Anyway, I think Scarlett has a lovely family.

  4. Thanks for taking the time to blog. This post makes me want to visit Oregon more than ever. I wonder who came up with the name “The Devil’s Elbow?” Great photos too. Love to you and the family Scarlet ❤️

    1. There are some weird named places in Oregon! The Devil’s Elbow, Mount Defiance, Devil’s Rest, etc. Some of the hikes and places are daunting and they’re named according to how hard, wild, or terrifying they are. Thanks for reading, love you 🙂

  6. I think you would love walking on the beaches in Australia Scarlett (though maybe not the one we went to today which has crocodile signs! 😱) You live in a beautiful part of the world! Beautiful coastline!
