This past week, we had an unplanned, last minute camping adventure. The entire West Coast of the US has been having extreme fires, and we had hazardous air quality in Portland, Oregon. I could barely breathe in the house, and I was a sneezy puppy. Mom and Dad duct taped the windows to keep the smoke out, but it was so yucky, we decided to take a last minute trip out of Oregon to explore.

Driving out of Oregon was a bummer because the entire state was smoky. Once we got to Idaho, we were in a beautiful, smoke-free paradise.

We used hipcamp.com for the first time, and we booked a dog-friendly campsite. There were horses to sniff and the land was great to roll around on. After running around and checking out the horses and goats, I was pooped and decided to take a long night’s sleep in our new tent. REI had a big sale, and we got the Kingdom 6. It truly feels like a palace camping in that thing! I highly recommend it.

After a quiet camping night, we headed to Shoshone Falls, which was about 3 miles away from our site. There is a $5 fee to get in, and dogs are permitted on the trails on leash. Mom and Dad had a butternut squash soup breakfast (weird), and I had my food and a cracker they dropped on the ground. Score! The falls were stunning, and we spent time walking around them before getting on the road again.

Rating for Shoshone Falls:

I gave Shoshone Falls one paw up because it felt like a tourist trap. The falls were extremely crowded, and there were vendors in the park selling tons of merchandise of the falls, which felt tacky. The $5 fee wasn’t terrible, but it felt like a lot when you realize how little there is to do in the park. There are a few dog-friendly hikes, but we didn’t have time to explore them on this trip. If you plan to visit, don’t forget to leash your dog throughout the park.
